Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North

Through volunteer labour and donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity partners with families to build safe, decent and affordable homes.

Families invest 500 hours of their own labour, called "sweat equity," into building their own houses and those of other families in lieu of a cash down payment. Houses are then sold to the homeowner families, who pay an affordable mortgage set at 30% of their household income.

Mission:

Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North’s mission is to empower families and make homeownership affordable by mobilizing community spirit and generosity.

Our Values:

HOUSING FOR ALL - We believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should be available to all.

HUMAN DIGNITY - We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being. We respect the people we serve and those that help us in this effort, and recognize them as our greatest resource.

PARTNERSHIP - We believe we can best achieve our mission through meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with others.

FAITH IN ACTION - We believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should be available to all.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSIVENESS - We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being. We respect the people we serve and those that help us in this effort, and recognize them as our greatest resource.

History:

Since 2004, Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North Society has given a hand up into homeownership to eighteen families on the North Island. Our latest project, started in 2017, is a multi-phase build on 477 Hilchey Road which will eventually house ten families.

We have two Restores, one in Campbell River and one in Courtenay, which help fund the building of new homes. New and previously used building materials home furnishings and appliances are donated, by local businesses, and private donors. The items are cleaned and tested before being made available for sale.

By recycling through our ReStores, tonnes of usable materials are diverted from our landfills.

Visit our website to find out more about how you can get involved and/or volunteer.
