Experience
I have been in private practice as a counsellor since January 2010. I work with men and women in equal numbers, the ages of my clients range from 6 to 82, and about 20% of my appointments are for couple or family counselling. Approximately, 20% of my clients are First Nations persons.
I have worked in a variety of contexts with a wide range of persons experiencing difficulties. As a result, I am comfortable working as a counsellor with: children, youth, and adults; individuals, couples, families, and groups; men and women; and across cultural differences. I have worked in wilderness settings and schools, community service organizations and residential programs, and in private practice. For four years my family lived in Bella Bella, a First Nations community on BC's Central Coast, where I was a teacher and counsellor. Prior to solely working as a counsellor in private practice, I was employed as a Youth and Family Substance Use Counsellor by the John Howard Society of the North Island. Currently, I also provide counselling services to students at Robron Learning Centre for School District 72 two days per week.
Gary Hartford has a Master of Counselling degree with a specialization in counselling psychology. As well, he is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC #3581) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. This is a professional designation that indicates that a counsellor has met criteria for education, experience, and supervised practice.
