What is a Midwife?
The word midwife has been used for centuries to describe a woman who is "with women" at birth. A well accepted international definition says "midwives are qualified health professionals who provide care to healthy women throughout pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, and to their newborn infants.
They provide counseling and teaching, as well as monitoring the health of mother and baby. Midwives provide care in the community, at home, clinics and in hospitals.
All women, regardless of socio-economic circumstances, have a right to accessible, comprehensive midwifery care and can self-refer themselves to the midwife.
About Us:
We are four midwives: Sheila Jager, RN RM; Teralee Fisk, RM; Yarrow Fox, RM; and Lauren McKenzie RM and we provide service from Oyster River to the North Island. At this time, patients from the north are required to come to us as we do not travel, at this time, to out-of-town locations or to the outer islands.
We are registered with the College of Midwives of British Columbia.
If you have a BC Health Card or BC Medical Services Plan, midwifery care and all necessary tests and services are covered by the Ministry of Health. If you do not have BC health coverage please speak directly with us regarding the fees.
