Campbell River Literacy Association: “Literacy for All”
We are a registered non-profit society, whose mandate is to foster and promote literacy, and the importance of literacy in individual lives as well as society as a whole. Our goal is to reach all individuals within the Campbell River area who have low literacy skills and wish to improve them.
Programs Offered
We offer a variety of programs, all of which provide one on one tutoring to individuals whose literacy skills are not fully developed. These include:
ESL Settlement Assistance Program
Our objective is to help newcomers to advance their English skills, to increase their knowledge of life in Canadian society and to assist with their long-term integration into Campbell River. Our primary activity is to provide English language tutoring support to adult immigrants and refugee newcomers to further their social, cultural, economic and political integration into our community. Tutoring is Monday to Thursday 8:30am-3:30pm and Monday and Thursday evening 6:30pm-8:30pm.
Adult Literacy Program
This community literacy program is designed for adults struggling with basic to mid level literacy challenges. Upon completion, adults are ready to enter other educational programs in pursuit of their personal goals. Tutoring is Monday to Thursday8:30am – 3:30pm and Monday and Thursday evening 6:30pm-8:30pm.
Computer Literacy Program
Basic computer training for people with little to no computer experience. This program provides access to computers and to most commonly used software programs.
Community Outreach Program
The outreach program allows us to offer support and advocacy for your clients in pursuit of their individual literacy needs. Our goal is to raise awareness of the literacy challenges in the community.
ESL Youth Program
In an effort to support the families of adults attending the evening classes we have introduced an ESL for youth project that runs concurrently with the adult sessions. We have added a youth program that augments the adult classes on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm – 8:30pm. This program is available to the children of adult learners and other ESL learners who wish to access our services or receive additional ESL help.
English Conversation Group
Due to the increasing number of English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program leaners, there is a growing need for another English program for newcomers. The English Practice Group is a great addition to the current ESL Settlement Assistance Program; our learners are very keen to improve their verbal communication skills and this program provides another opportunity to practice their English skills. The objective of this program is to decrease the wait list for English Language services and encourage new participants to improve their English through conversation..
