City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture 50+ Active Living Programs - Community Centre location

* Vibrant * Healthy * Engaged * Recreation for all ages, stages and abilities * 50+ Active Living: integrate healthy activities into daily life. The department has accessible facilities for 50+ programs at the Community Centre, the Sportsplex and seasonally at Centennial Pool. Membership provides access to approximately 200 different activities per year that promote a lifestyle that values healthy living for the whole person - physically, mentally and socially.

Programs Offered

  • Activities are FREE if they are led by a volunteer member and programs have REDUCED FEES if they led by paid instructors.
  • Membership is $20 per person and is valid January to December.
  • Non members are welcome and pay $2 per visit to drop in activities (i.e. if they are under 50 years of age).
  • 50+ Active Living Bulletin is available on the last Tuesday of the month at the Community Centre, Sportsplex, Strathcona Gardens and Sunshine Wellness Centre. Find news about trips, birthday parties, lunches, dances, crafts, sports, events, etc updated each month.
  • Our recreation department is inclusive to persons of all ages, stages and abilities. We welcome everyone. Participants may be a young person or a person experiencing physical, financial or mental challenges. Recreation staff help to ensure a worthwhile experience for all, providing guidance, intervention and training as needed.
  • Members are encouraged to volunteer as leaders, instructors and to help at fundraisers. There is something for everyone to contribute!
  • All volunteers (an average of 200) are registered with the department and require a Criminal Record Check. Applications are available at the Community Centre and Sportsplex office.
  • Members who volunteer to be leaders are essential for the operation of FREE drop in activities. Many volunteers help out at special events, decorating, driving, cleaning up, writing cards and a host of behind the scenes support jobs.
  • Members volunteer at fundraising events: Spring Plant & Jumble Sale, Fall Christmas Bazaar, Watercolour Painting Show and Sale, Pottery Show and Sale and the Annual Toy & Craft Show as well as on-going Quilt Sales, Knitting & Crochet Sales and other fundraisers. They also donate baking, knitting, quilts and crafts, new items for Auctions and creations from pottery, painting and craft classes to the sales.
  • Free drop in activities: Applique, Badminton, Birthday Parties, Bocce, Bridge, Carpet Bowling, Coffee Time, Crafts, Cribbage, Crochet & Knitting, Dance Practise, Deck Shuffleboard, ESL-English Second Language, Euchre, Hand Quilting, Liquid Embroidery, Mah Jong, Mexican Train Dominoes, Pickle Ball, Potluck Dinners, , Scrabble, Singles Bag Lunch, Stamp Club, Table Tennis, Tai Chi.
  • Drop-in Programs with fees: Fitness, Monthly Lunch Bunch, Seniors Fitness Consult, Slo-pitch, Trips, Tours
  • Partnership contracts with VIHA to help provide access for Integrated Health Network clients in Recreation and Culture programs.
  • Partnerships with community non-profit groups such as the Women’s Centre to assist with 50+ Peer Counselling, Literacy Now to assist with Seniors Teaching Seniors Computer Literacy classes, and Diabetes Association to assist with food skills for seniors.
