North Vancouver Island Aboriginal Training Society

North Vancouver Island Aboriginal Training Society (NVIATS) is an Aboriginal training organization that operates under the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS), which is funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The ASETS program provides funding to support the costs of programs, services and other activities undertaken to increase the participation of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian labour market.

Objectives:

The objectives of the NVIATS are:

  • To provide training and employment opportunities for all our people within the region;
  • To commit to the principle of equal access to status, non-status, on-reserve and off reserve aboriginal organizations and clients;
  • To create training initiatives that lead directly to full time sustainable employment;
  • To establish parity with respect to employment rates between the aboriginal labour force and the non-aboriginal labour force.
Services:
NVIATS provides the following services to organizations and clients in our region:
  • Request for Proposals (RFP)
    Every year NVIATS opens this opportunity for Bands, Organizations, and other industry partners, in our area to access funds for employment and training projects, and youth funding for the summer student program;

  • Walk In Client Program
    This program is available to all First Nation peoples, status or non-status, on reserve or off, to access funds to return to school or employment. The program funds cover tuition and book fees, necessary safety gear to attend training, as well as a wage subsidy to assist with securing employment; 

  • BEST Program
    This program is delivered in NVIATS Campbell River office and provides 8 weeks of employment skills development workshops and industry certified training. Upon completion, the participant will enter a 4 week work placement.

The Goals of NVIATS are to:

  • Provide training and employment opportunities for all our peoples within the region.
  • Commit to the principle of equal access to status, non-status, on-reserve and off reserve First Nation organizations.
  • Customize and promote the effective programs and policies for our people within the region to meet present and future needs.
  • Achieve aboriginal control over training employment initiatives which are outside the Society's responsibility.
  • Implement a process for delivering, monitoring and evaluating training/employment initiatives.
